Chapter 12
âYouâre Thomasâs daughter?â The older man with the short and tight, not to mention grey, curls knitted around his head looked at me with a cautious eye from behind his bifocals when he let me through the first door of the assisted living facility.
âYes, sir. I do believe I met you once.â I was having a hard time matching his current appearance with the photo of him in the newspaper Abby had pulled up.
The young man in the photo was upright with a strong jaw and jutting chin. The man before me was hunched over and frail.
âI think you did. When your daddy came to pick up the stove from me.â His head turned to the right. âI reckon you want to come in?â
âYes, sir. Iâd love to ask you a few questions if youâve got the time.â I could tell by the way his jaw set that he knew I was there about the fire.
âCome on then. I just put on some coffee.â He shuffled over to the handicap button on the wall to make the next set of doors automatically open. âDo you like coffee like your daddy?â
âI do.â I smiled when I recalled a memory from way back. âYou just sparked a memory. A very fond one.â
I followed him through the door into the open atrium with a couple of tables, one with a jigsaw puzzle and another with a set of pens, markers, and coloring books. There was a kitchen-style area with a large bar with a big basket of fruit. The glass wall beyond had a nice view of the woods and a large concrete patio with furniture covered in winter storage bags.
âIâm on the second floor.â He waved me over to the elevator. âWhat was it about a memory?â
âMy dad. He used to sit at the kitchen table in the morning before work. It would be early. And heâd slip me a few sips of his coffee while my mom was tending to one of my sisters.â I laughed and faced him in the elevator on our ride up. âMy mom would fuss and say that I didnât need the caffeine. My dad told her I had a little headache and that I needed a few sips to help clear it.â
âYour daddy loved you. Said you were special.â The ding of the elevator stopping at its destination cut off the chitchat. âI reckon youâre here to learn about the fire. You know, Judd Tripoly tried to pin that on me.â
The elevator opened into a nice sitting area with a few large chairs, a coffee table, and a television on the wall. We took a right and walked down the hallway until we reached his apartment.
âI did read in the report how you gave my father the stove, but I donât remember picking it up with him.â I really wished I did. There were few memories I had of just me and my dad. âMaybe you can tell me about it, and I might remember.
